An American in Beijing
“On a rainy July 23, the American classical guitarist Scott Morris gave his Beijing debut recital at Beijing World Theater. This is Morris’ first time performing in China and also the first important international classical guitar concert for GuitarChina.com during the 2005 season. The concert began at 1:00p.m. and Scott Morris wore traditional Chinese-style clothing as he walked out onto the stage to the audience’s warm applause.
The first half included music by Andrew York, Leo Brouwer and Villa Lobos. Andrew York is the American modern composer and member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet as well as a friend of Mr. Morris. During the intermission, the author discovers that Mr. Morris already is sweating profusely due to the heat of the stage lights that were sufficient to roast a person. At the beginning of the second half, Morris tells the audience about his19th century guitar and apologies for not bringing it to China and promises to bring it for his next trip. The program for the second half consists entirely of composers from the 19th century such as Fernando Sor, Paganini and Mertz. Morris ended this concert with his own arrangement of some traditional Chinese music.
After the performance, Mr. Morris signed autographs for the audience and posed for photos in the greenroom while a friend translated from English to Chinese. After the autographs, Morris went directly to the East City Children's Palace guitar classrooms for a master class with Mr. Sun Hongguang as well as Mr. Sun's students. At 7 o'clock that evening, he left Beijing for another city. Mr. Morris said that the Beijing audience has made a very good impression on him and hoped to have the opportunity to return in the future for more concerts.” – GuitarChina.com (translated from Chinese)
